African Alumni Share Their Vision for Africa in Webinar

As part of the commemorations of Tohoku University's 115th anniversary, a webinar entitled "African Alumni Vision for Africa" was held on August 21, 2022. Over 70 participants, including alumni belonging to the African Association of Miyagi (AFAM), organized the webinar, where they discussed Tohoku University's study abroad programs, scholarship information and post-graduate careers.

In his opening remarks, the President of AFAM, Dr. Isaac Yaw Asiedu (PhD in Engineering 1993), proclaimed that the event would be a steppingstone for greater cooperation between Tohoku University and AFAM, and hopefully deepen the African alumni network.

Representing Tohoku University at the event was Professor Tetsuya Nagasaka, Vice President for Social Outreach & 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Collaboration. Delighted the occasion marked the first event between AFAM alumni and Tohoku University, Nagasaka expressed a desire to strengthen the university's ties with African alumni.

Thereafter, Professor Yumiko Watanabe, from the Global Learning Center, introduced Tohoku University's study abroad programs and opportunities for international students. African alumni then spoke of the varying career paths after graduating, exchanged views on the future of Africa and shared how they hope to contribute to the continent's growth.

Alumni also emphasized Africa's great potential, noting its future population growth and prospective for greater economic integration. To tap into this potential, harnessing the knowledge, skills and experiences of educated individuals is crucial. In addition, alumni stressed the importance of connecting younger Africans with meaningful education opportunities.
