Imagine being able to add "get an eye exam" to your grocery shopping list. The Machikado Health Lab (opened July 18, 2024) makes this possible by setting up a space where anyone can drop in to get a quick health check from the eye exams. This collaboration between Tohoku University Hospital, Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and AEON Tohoku Co., Ltd. has created an innovative hub that will serve the community, as well as researchers looking to advance the state of healthcare.

Located inside an AEON shopping mall in Tomiya, Miyagi Prefecture, the Machikado Health Lab is designed to improve healthcare accessibility for everyone. The damage caused by eye diseases is often irreversible and life-changing. Afterall, our eye-health is critical for an immense amount of day-to-day tasks and even for our entire life health Furthermore, recent research has shown that by observing the eyes, it is possible to predict the risk of systemic diseases such as heart disease and brain disease. If eye diseases are diagnosed and treated early, vision loss can be prevented.

In order to promote the habit of getting regular eye exams, the Machikado Health Lab conveniently allows visitors to arrive without an appointment and complete digital eye exams themselves (or with the assistance of a qualified staff / doctor). This allows visitors to perform a health check as part of their daily routine. For example, a visual acuity check can be done in 3 minutes and a visual field test (which may detect vision loss related to conditions such as glaucoma) takes approximately only 5 minutes. Those who agree to participate in research may have health consultations from a doctor at Tohoku University Hospital on days when a doctor is in attendance.

Machikado Health Lab is dedicated to helping visitors by improving current methods of prevention, detection and treatment. The facility will ask visitors whether they consent to providing their measurements to researchers for such studies. Based on the data, researchers can then proceed with the research and development of medical devices, user-friendly selfie devices, healthcare systems, and disease prediction models. 雷速体育_中国足彩网￥在线直播 goals revolve around the concept of "establishing a healthcare that fixes the future."

The facility is currently focused on ophthalmology, but offers ways to assess sleep quality, autonomic nerves, and blood flow. They plan to expand to other medical fields in the future.
