Tohoku University Professor Fujino Incentive Award 2025

Seven Chinese students have received the Tohoku University Professor Fujino Incentive Award for 2025. They were given their certificates at a ceremony on September 25 in the lecture hall where Lu Xun, the man widely hailed as the father of modern Chinese literature, once studied.

The recipients were: Liu Zhaoran (Science), Yang Shuhan (Medicine), Fan Ziqiu (Dentistry), Yin Meng (Engineering), Wang Xiaohan (International Cultural Studies), Cheng Qiuyu (Environmental Studies) and Wu Jingxuan (Biomedical Engineering).

In his congratulatory speech, President Teiji Tominaga noted that Lu Xun was one of the first international students to attend university in Japan and was a great example of Tohoku University's "open doors" policy of accepting talented students regardless of nationality, gender or background.

"It is not difficult to imagine the hardships Lu Xun experienced as a student in a place with different language and customs during a time when foreigners were still uncommon," he said. "But as he vividly described in his short stories, the guidance he received from Professor Genkuro Fujino when he was in Sendai left a positive and unforgettable impression on him."

Tominaga then added that he hopes all students will similarly thrive under the guidance of their own academic advisors at the university. "The bond of friendship between Japan and China established by Professor Fujino and Lu Xun has been maintained for over a century. We hope that recipients of today's award and all graduate students from China studying at our university will become bridges for Sino-Japan exchange and grow into future global leaders."

Ken Sasaki, chairman of the Miyagi Japan-China Friendship Association, echoed the sentiment in his speech congratulating the students. He also presented them with a special clear folder celebrating the contributions of Lu Xun.

Engineering student Yin Meng then spoke on behalf of the award recipients, thanking the university, the Miyagi Japan-China Friendship Association and all her professors for their support.

"My connection with Tohoku University began with Lu Xun. As a high school student, I read Lu Xun's essays in my textbook and was deeply moved by his encounter with Professor Fujino and his attitude towards studying in a foreign country," she said. "At that time, a small seed of desire to someday study in Sendai blossomed in my heart."

During her five years at Tohoku University, Yin said that she encountered the same kindness and academic passion from her professors that Lu Xun had described in his writings about Professor Fujino.

"Just as Lu Xun shared the knowledge he gained from Professor Fujino with young people in China, I too hope to pass on the scholarly spirit and research approach I've cultivated here to future generations of students."

The Tohoku University Professor Fujino Incentive Award was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding Chinese students enrolled in graduate programmes at the university. Recipients are selected based on the achievements of their research papers, as well as their potential to contribute to future academic exchanges.
