Lecture on Asylum Seekers and Refugees

Tohoku University's Centre for Northeast Asian Studies is hosting a lecture on the topic of asylum seekers and refugees in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The resulting war has displaced millions of Ukranians within their own borders and caused many to flee, seeking refuge across Europe and countries beyond.

Many people from Russia are also fleeing to other countries in order to escape military service.

In this lecture, a panel of experts in political science, international human rights law, constitutional law and anthropology will discuss the status of asylum seekers fleeing Ukraine and Russia, and whether they can be considered refugees in Japan under the Immigration Control Act.
