Lu Xun was one of the first international students to attend university in Japan and was a great example of Tohoku University's "open doors" policy of accepting talented students regardless of nationality, gender or background.
His collection of short stories titled "Professor Fujino" recounts his time as a student in Sendai. In 2005, Tohoku University set up the Professor Fujino Incentive Award to recognise outstanding Chinese students enrolled in graduate programmes here, and to continue the strong relationship between the university and China.
