Knots And Ways To Obtain Them From Groups

event20150624-1.jpgProfessor Vaughan Jones is a New Zealand mathematician known for his work on von Neumann algebras and knot polynomials. In a special lecture at Tohoku University this month, he will speak on "Knots and Ways to Obtain Them from Groups."

A physical knot is a very familiar object in everyday life. It is used to secure objects, to keep our shoes on our feet and even as decorative ornaments. Mathematical knots are idealisations of physical knots while capturing something of their essence.

A group is a mathematical object consisting of a set with a binary operation satisfying a few axioms.

To tie it all together, Professor Jones will introduce two complicated but concrete groups - the braid group and R. Thompson's group F - and explore how they can be used to construct all knots.
