The Group of Seven and the Rise of the Rest

The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal bloc of industrialized democracies which meets annually to discuss central economic and security challenges facing the world.

Comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the group has been coming under criticism for not including the increasingly-important emerging economies.

In recent years, economic power and political influence have been shifting towards these emerging economies in a phenomenon referred to as the "rise of the rest."

This lecture by Georgetown University Senior Fellow Casimir A. Yost, will focus on the new challenges and issues facing the G7 in this era of diffused power, where no single organization can make and enforce decisions.

It comes just ahead of the 42nd G7 leaders' summit to be held this year in Mie Prefecture from May 26-27. The Finance Ministers' and Central Bank Governors' Meeting will be held from May 20-21 here in Sendai City.
