The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has launched a new working group to discuss the standardization of ethics in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), ahead of a future where humans and robots coexist.
Yueh-Hsuan Weng, assistant professor at Tohoku University's Frontier 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences (FRIS), has been appointed chair of the working group by the IEEE Standards Association. The group will establish a new AI ethics standard, known as IEEE P7017?, to be enacted in 2026.
The purpose of this standard is to encourage robot developers to incorporate ethical concepts into their designs when designing social robots. For this standard, the concept of "compliance by design" is introduced, and legal - as well as ethical - disputes between existing laws and emerging technologies that may arise when using social robots, are addressed. It is hoped that these problems will be alleviated.
