Tohoku University President Teiji Tominaga led a Tohoku University delegation on an official visit to the United Kingdom from December 10 to 12, 2025. The delegation included Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi, and Associate Executive Vice President Atsuhiro Nakagawa.
On December 11, the delegation visited University College London (UCL), where they toured the Institute of Neurology and met with UCL President and Provost Michael Spence to discuss future collaboration. The meeting concluded with the signing of a Letter of Intent by Presidents Tominaga and Spence, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening institutional ties. The agreement emphasized expanded academic collaboration, including a possible double degree program in disaster science, and identified neuroscience and quantum science as new priority areas for joint research.
The visit coincided with a joint workshop involving researchers from both universities, including early-career researchers (ECRs). Participants engaged in interdisciplinary discussions spanning life sciences, data science, materials science, artificial intelligence, ophthalmology, and innovation. Both presidents highlighted the importance of ECRs in advancing sustainable collaboration and expressed their hope that the workshop would lead to future joint research initiatives.
Later that day, a reception co-hosted by the Embassy of Japan in the UK and Tohoku University was held at Japan House London. Approximately 80 UK-based Japanese researchers and industry representatives attended the event. President Tominaga introduced Tohoku University's initiatives as an accredited University for International 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Excellence.
His visit is part of strengthened connections with the UK's academic and industrial communities.
On December 12, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of Japan in the UK, where they met with His Excellency Mr. Hiroshi Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to the UK. President Tominaga shared the university's internationalization initiatives, including Gateway College. Ambassador Suzuki expressed strong interest in these efforts and high expectations for Tohoku University's role as Japan's first University for International 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Excellence.
Through this visit, Tohoku University seeks to advance its strategic partnership with UCL and further expand international research collaboration and human resource exchange across the United Kingdom.
