Fall Commencement: Congratulations to the Class of 2025

Tohoku University celebrated its Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony at Kawauchi Hagi Hall on September 25. The event honoured 357 graduates, with 54 receiving their undergraduate degrees, 154 their master's and 149 their doctoral degrees. International students comprised more than half of the graduating class.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate the occasion in person, while a live broadcast of the ceremony was available for those unable to attend.

In his address, Tohoku University President Teiji Tominaga congratulated the graduates on their milestone achievement, noting that their university experiences would serve them well in their future endeavours. "You are beginning your careers in a time of rapid change. We face global challenges like climate change, new technologies like AI and a world that is often uncertain. These challenges are large but they are also opportunities for you to lead and create a better future," he said.

"What you learned here is a strong foundation, but it is only the beginning. The world will keep changing, so you must also keep growing. Stay curious and be flexible. Today's big problems also cannot be solved by one person alone. By working with people from different backgrounds, you will find better solutions and a deeper understanding of the world."

President Tominaga then shared a powerful anecdote about the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, highlighting how the university community united during the tragedy. "It was a moment that tested who we are. Our campus was damaged, and our research stopped. But in the days that followed, something amazing happened - our researchers, doctors and students came together to help. Our hospital cared for the injured, our scientists worked to understand the disaster, and our whole community reached out to support those who had lost everything."

He emphasised that this experience taught a valuable lesson: "A university is not a distant, isolated place. It is part of the community. In times of crisis, we must be on the front lines, creating knowledge, finding solutions and giving hope." He urged graduates to carry forward "the spirit of resilience and responsibility that defines Tohoku University."

Valedictorian Hiroki Yamao from the Graduate School of Life Sciences gave a speech on behalf of the students, thanking everyone for their support and reflecting on the start of his university life during the COVID-19 pandemic. "This was a period of great uncertainty, not only for me but for all students," he said. "Yet the crisis inspired progress. Through shared efforts, we pioneered new standards and ways of working. Collectively, we learned new ways of conducting discussions, sharing ideas and advancing our studies under unprecedented circumstances."

Yamao described his research on glial cells in the brain and how university-supported overseas programmes enhanced his academic development. He concluded by calling on his fellow graduates to "give back to society and to the academic community" by applying their knowledge and ethical values to "drive innovation, contribute to the advancement of human knowledge and dedicate ourselves to solving societal challenges."

The ceremony concluded with the traditional singing of the school song "Aoba Moyuru Kono Michinoku" led by the university's chorus clubs.

Outside the hall, it was all smiles as the graduates took photographs with family and each other, and made some final memories before parting ways.

The Public Relations Department joins the entire Tohoku University family in congratulating the graduating class of 2025 and wishing them every success in the future.
