Graduation Day: Congratulations to the Class of 2025

Tohoku University held its spring commencement ceremony today for 4,642 students at Sendai Sunplaza Hall. The ceremony was held in three parts - one for graduate students and two for undergraduates.

Family members and guardians were on hand to help celebrate this special day. And for those unable to attend, there was, as always, a live stream of the ceremony online.

In his speech, Tohoku University President Teiji Tominaga congratulated the 2,362 undergraduate, 1,801 graduate and 479 doctoral students on completing their studies. And he urged them to use the knowledge gained from their time at the university, to be catalysts for change and to make a positive impact on their communities.

"Tohoku University's history is one of embracing change and challenging the future. Our selection as a University for International 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Excellence acknowledges our institutional identity," he said. "And in this era of profound transformation, as you navigate various professional journeys across different settings, I believe each of you will excel as true movers and shakers in your fields."

The president ended his speech by encouraging everyone to join the alumni association "Shuyukai," to stay connected with the university, wherever the future takes them. "Today is not the end of your relationship with university friends and colleagues, but the start of a new chapter where we will work together as equals," he said. "You are all important members of the Tohoku University family, and this will always be your home."

In his speech on behalf of the students in the Masters and Doctoral programmes, Goro Kobayashi from the Graduate School of Information Sciences thanked the professors and staff of the university for their guidance and support.

He spoke of entering Tohoku University as an undergraduate nine years ago where he discovered his passion for natural language processing and artificial intelligence at the Faculty of Engineering. "This led me to investigate how AI systems process language internally, research that I continued at the Graduate School of Information Sciences," he said. "Through my research experience, I developed the ability to appropriately identify issues and solve problems using logical thinking and mathematical tools, which I feel has formed my foundation as a researcher."

Kobayashi, along with Haruna Takeda from the Graduate School of Medicine, also received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Students.

The second and third sessions of the day were for the undergraduate students, starting with the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Engineering.

Misaki Hoshi from the School of Engineering, spoke of the life-changing skills she attained whilst studying civil structures and urban planning. "In the practical exercises of designing towns, I experienced both the fascination and challenges of civil engineering in creating public spaces, while developing multifaceted perspectives, cooperation skills and the perseverance to face problems without clear answers," she said. "This helped me grow significantly both as a civil engineer and as a person."

She then called on her fellow graduates to apply what they have learnt over the past four years to make the world a better place. "Today, we each proceed on our own path, whether advancing to graduate school or entering employment. We will continue to hold pride as Tohoku University graduates, demonstrate our expertise in diverse fields, and strive to become individuals who can contribute to Japan and the international community."

The third session was for students from the Faculties of Letters, Education, Law, Economics, Science and Agriculture.

Takehiro Suzuki from the Faculty of Economics spoke about the various challenges facing the world today and the roles that students and graduates of Tohoku University have an opportunity to play in shaping the future.

"Our mission is to accurately understand the current situation, to deepen our knowledge based on the scholarship and technology built by our predecessors, to engage in thorough discussion, and to leave more options for future generations," he said. "I believe Japan still holds significant influence in the international community and stands in an important position towards realising peace and a better society."

All three ceremonies ended with the familiar strains of the school song "Aoba Moyuru Kono Michinoku" led by the Tohoku University Male Chorus and Mixed Chorus Clubs.

Outside the hall, it was all cheers and smiles as the students took pictures and made more memories before parting ways.

The Public Relations Department joins the president and the entire Tohoku University family in saying congratulations and good luck to the graduating class of 2025.
