Celebrating Women in Science and the 10th Anniversary of the Science Angels

Ninety female graduate students from Tohoku University's science departments have been appointed new Science Angels this year. Seventy-six of them attended an orientation ceremony at the Katahira Kitamon Commons on June 6.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Toshiya Ueki, Director of the Center for Gender Equality Promotion and Executive Vice President for General Affairs and International Relations, as well as other professors and staff from the university.

The Science Angels Programme, now in its 10th year, celebrates the dynamism of women in science. It encourages female graduate students to develop knowledge and skills that are necessary for conducting research through engagement in outreach activities.

Science Angels serve as role models for young girls, regularly give lectures to high schools students, and offer demonstrations and hands-on activities at science events for school-age children.

The programme was initiated in 2006, and remains a cornerstone of Tohoku University's on-going efforts to promote the role of women in science and develop a more women-friendly campus.
