Tohoku University Global Leader Award - Winter 2024/25

Nineteen students have been awarded the Tohoku University Global Leader certificate for Winter 2024/25. The ceremony was held on February 3 at Katahira Campus.

The Global Leader programme is an important part of the university's efforts to promote intercultural collaborative learning and to develop future leaders with a global mindset.

To earn certification, students accumulate points by participating in activities designed to prepare them for international leadership roles. These activities include study abroad programmes, international exchanges, volunteer work and passing foreign language proficiency tests.

As Tohoku University President Teiji Tominaga was unable to attend the ceremony, Executive Vice President for Education and Student Support Hirotsugu Takizawa read a congratulatory message on his behalf. In it, he said that as Japan's first and only University for International 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Excellence, it is important to develop students into leaders who can address the world's most challenging issues.

"It is our university's mission to conduct world-class research and education while nurturing individuals who can play active roles in global society," he said. "I believe that encouraging the free-thinking creativity of young researchers and students like all of you is one of the keys to fulfilling this mission."

In a speech on behalf of the recipients, Ryo Matsuda, a fourth-year student from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, spoke of the importance of meeting challenges head on. "To achieve a goal, we must challenge ourselves without fear of failure. I think this mindset is very important to becoming a global leader."

He also shared his dreams of improving global healthcare by helping to develop new and more effective medicine. "Pharmaceutical science is a fundamental discipline in healthcare, and recently, there has been intense competition in developing better drugs, with constantly changing targets for potential medicines," he said. "In such a field, making new discoveries is paramount, and interacting with researchers worldwide would give me the opportunity to learn different perspectives and deepen my creative thinking abilities to conduct more advanced research."

Since the Tohoku University Global Leader programme began in 2013, some 280 students have received the certification.
