Tohoku University held its annual Alumni Association Student Clubs Awards ceremony on February 13 at Kawauchi Campus.

The event, attended by approximately 200 students and faculty members, recognized cultural and athletic achievements this past year, and the university's commitment to 文武両道 ("bunburyodo"), an idiom meaning "both pen and sword" that reflects the ideals of excellence in both academic and extracurricular pursuits.

In his congratulatory speech, University President Teiji Tominaga noted that many students and groups performed well in national and international competitions in 2024, whilst also being active in community outreach and volunteer work.
"Beyond academic studies, your dedication to sports, arts and various other pursuits will undoubtedly enrich your future lives and careers," he said. "Moreover, the achievements of our clubs and students also help to energize our university and inspire many people."
Students and clubs across multiple categories were then honoured on stage.

In the cultural activities category, Yuma Yorita of the Mixed Choir Club received the President's Award for his contributions to choral culture; while the Amateur Radio Club was awarded the Ishida Cup for its technical excellence and community outreach.
The Umino Award and the Suemitsu Award went to the A Capella Chorus Club and Kuya Abe of the Rakugo 雷速体育_中国足彩网¥在线直播 Club respectively.

In athletics, the President's Award was given to Yuki Ueki of the Baseball Club for his outstanding performance in the Sendai Six Universities Baseball League, where he recorded the highest batting average.
The Kurokawa Cup was awarded to the American Football Club for winning the Tohoku Student American Football League and reaching the top 8 in the national championship.
The Shimura Cup went to Windnauts, the Human-powered Aircraft Club, for their success in competition as well as their public outreach activities, which included aircraft experience sessions for local residents at the Sendai City Science Museum.

The Suzuki Award was presented to Momofuku Yasuda of the Shorinji Kempo Club for his impressive results in the Tohoku regional and national competitions. And the Otani Award was presented to five teams that won their respective competitions at the 63rd National Seven Universities Athletic Meet last year: Women's Basketball, Women's Lacrosse, Fencing, Water Polo and Soft Tennis.
The ceremony ended with encouraging messages from the university's Director of Cultural Activities Fumio Narita, and the Director of Athletic Activities Masaki Kubo. There were also high hopes for reclaiming the overall championship title at this year's National Seven Universities Athletic Meet.

Tohoku University has won the championship 16 times and currently sits in second place with only the winter sports done and with most of the competition still to take place this summer.
"As (defending champions) Hokkaido University is hosting this year, I strongly hope we can overcome the host advantage and reclaim the overall championship," said Tominaga. "I look forward to all of us celebrating victory together in the autumn!"
